Chapter Fourteen

“I’m sorry, Deborah, would you please convey my apologies to Senator Flack? I am no longer in the employment of the investor I represented. I am sure they will send someone else to follow up with you soon.”

“Oh, no. What happened? Both of us really liked you.”

“Nothing happened. I have been looking at moving away from Washington for a while, and now the opportunity presented itself. I accepted a wonderful job opportunity in Houston.”

“Congratulations then, although as I said, it is a pity. I would have liked us to be friends.”

With you having fucked Slade? Hardly likely.

Ziva ended the call soon after and walked onto the balcony. She was staying at her younger cousin, Jade Luther’s, penthouse apartment in Bridgeport. She was currently in the UK at a symposium for the fashion industry. As one of the top designers in the world, she had been asked to run a series of talks during the three week symposium.

It had been a week since Ziva had run out of Club Alpha Cove. Still, every night she saw Slade. She saw him in that moment at the club when he stepped against Amelia’s back to fuck her with his cock ready and already covered with a condom. Her heart bled, and she woke up with wet cheeks every morning.

“Damn you, Slade Wolf!”

No matter how many times she ran every talk she’s had with him and Ruark through her mind, she knew she would never be able to accept that. She could never be with him knowing he would fuck other women. The fact that it meant nothing to him did not make her feel better. She clearly did not matter to him either.

He had not given up on her and kept calling and sending text messages. She was not stupid however. She never switched that phone on. He had told her about Quinlan and how he and Bracus could find anyone. She recovered her messages through her answering service using the burner phone she bought when she started the investigation on Flack.

Every day he left a voice message, and his voice became more furious with each passing day. She sighed when she listened to Cassidy’s daily messages. She needed to let her know she was fine. It was not fair to her to just disappear. She had done nothing wrong, and at least she was actually worried about Ziva. She grabbed her tote bag, went to Seaside Park near Park Point and found a payphone. She dialed Cassidy’s number and she answered on the second ring.

“Cassidy Shaw speaking.”

“Hi, cuz.”

“Ziva! Goddamn it, where are you? Why are you only calling me now? I have been worried sick. How could you be so irresponsible and unfeeling?”

Ziva rubbed her brow. Trust Cassidy to make her feel guilty within the first sentence. She sighed and realized there was a rumble of voices in the background.

“I’m fine, and I am sorry I did not call earlier. I just needed some time alone.”

“When are you coming back?”

“I’m not going to come and stay there again.
